Restoring Family Values to Society - The Way to Happiness Program

Millions of copies of The Way to Happiness have been distributed to communities in virtually every country in the world.

More than 52 million copies of the booklet have been distributed in 23 languages in 69 countries by Scientologists and non-Scientologists. It enjoys widespread popularity because it effectively reestablishes moral and family values, not by a set of rules and “dos and don’ts” but by providing actual insight and showing how each precept can be put to use.

“There is fundamental grassroots value in everything that I do... It is so small, yet it is so big, its bigness is difficult to describe — somehow when times are dark, and the road is rough, The way to Happiness somehow opens the door to a way formard.”

— President of the National Tradition Healer Association South Africa

The booklet has received more than a dozen U.S. Congressional recognitions and has been enthusiastically endorsed by police, civic leaders, businessmen, educators and other groups who have distributed it broadly. But most important, The Way to Happiness gets results.

One 12-year-old who was sick of the violence in the halls of his inner city school in East Nashville persuaded his teacher and fellow classmates to participate in a “Set a Good Example” contest based on one of the 21 precepts contained in The Way to Happiness. The contest, organized by a group of community and business leaders, proved so successful in instilling moral values that soon the entire school was taking part. Not only did violence in the school drop by more than 70 percent, but the children started to take responsibility for helping others as well as themselves. In a predominantly black, single-parent community where the parents themselves frequently had little education, the change in attitude and behavior was both striking and significant.

Similar results have been obtained in many other countries. More than 15,000 schools and 7 million students have taken part in programs such as the “Set A Good Example” Contest and Youth Essay Contest, which teach application of the principles in The Way to Happiness. According to an independent study by S.H. Beckman and Associates, 90 percent of teachers submitting project reports noticed a positive change in students’ attitudes – they were more positive, proud of their accomplishments, worked together better and were more friendly and helpful.

The booklet is also the basis for Criminon, an effective criminal rehabilitation program. More than 2,500 inmates in over 700 prisons have made use of this program, resulting in a dramatic lowering of the recidivism rate in the facilities where it has been implemented.
