The Hollywood Education and Literacy Project (HELP) brings L. Ron Hubbard’s study methods to children and adults, and also trains police officers to tutor at-risk youth.

Hollywood Education and Literacy Project (HELP)

      In cooperation with local business leaders, community organizations and the California State government, the Hollywood Education and Literacy Project (HELP) is bringing L. Ron Hubbard study methods to children and adults. The program also trains police officers in these techniques, enabling them to tutor and mentor at-risk youth.

      “In my 21 years in the department, I have seen an increase in delinquent youth, and an attendant loss of life among many young people,” said a Chief of Detectives for the Los Angeles Police Department. “I have also seen the correlation between illiteracy and crime and violence. The HELP project offers the kind of hope and results we need to reverse that trend.”

      The all-volunteer HELP project has spread from community to community. It has served as a model for nearly a dozen similar projects throughout the United States.

The Developing World

      Prior to the end of apartheid, thousands of South African teachers were trained in Mr. Hubbard’s educational methods. Education Alive, a secular community literacy program, was begun at a time when government policy mandated inferior education for black citizens.

      “You have no idea what a relief you brought into our lives with your study methods,” said the mother of a Soweto student. “You brought hope where there was none at all. You brought life when we had given up hope altogether.”

      The success of Mr. Hubbard’s methods has spawned similar programs in Ghana, Uganda, Sudan, South America, Malaysia and China. In Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Education has implemented the learning program in district of Shurugwi with hundreds of teachers now applying these skills to their peoples.

      These who man these programs work for several months at a time in the country or district concerned. The United Kingdom and Southern African offices of Applied Scholastics are the clearinghouses for these volunteers.
