The Inner City If you go to any city and look in the eyes of our young African-American men and women, said Baptist minister Alfreddie Johnson, you will see anger and alienation. Why? They are surrounded by a wealth of opportunities and yet are convinced these opportunities are not for them. This is the result of illiteracy. This anger and alienation is echoed in overcrowded urban areas internationally, as television and other media taunt the poor with images of unattainable comforts. But Rev. Johnson, out of the ashes of the 1992 Los Angeles riots formed the World Literacy Crusade, a grassroots movement that is bringing hope to inner cities. L. Ron Hubbards breakthrough study methods have enabled the people in my community to learn and succeed in life, he said. As I studied them, it became clear to me why other educational initiatives have failed. I had trouble growing up, because of my color and my environment, said one student. I got into drugs and gangs, and I got in too far and got myself shot. All of that is in the past now. Study Technology is powerful. It makes you want to learn, makes you your own teacher. These people stuck with me until I woke up and realized that I could learn and that I wanted to. Fueled by an ever-increasing number of graduates and community members who have been trained to apply Mr. Hubbards methods, the World Literacy Crusade has grown to a movement of international scope, with more than 40 programs in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia. This is not just another 'do good' project, says singer, composer and actor Isaac Hayes, international spokesman for the World Literacy Crusade. It works. L. Ron Hubbard's methods can uncover the barriers to study and learning and clean up the miseducation that precipitates unemployment, drugs, violence and crime.
