Effective Community Programs - Providing Assistance to Thousands

“You have worked with energy and dedication to provide solutions to the many problems that government alone cannot fix. With your active involvement, you have brought hope and help to countless people in need. ...
Your work is going a long way toward healing and renewing your community, inspiring all who seek to improve our world.” – Bill Clinton President of the United States of America

One of the most active and successful efforts is the Los Angeles Community Program which, with the help of volunteers from the Church of Scientology, has contributed more than 60,000 hours of work to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, providing assistance to thousands of foster children.

“It has been a fulfilling experience working with the community service staff for over ten years,” wrote a director with Children’s Services in a letter to the Los Angeles Church of Scientology. “You have been a tremendous resource for foster children in Los Angeles county. Having worked with you and numerous persons referred by you has meant more than words can convey.”

In 1996, President Bill Clinton recognized the director of the church’s program with a commendation which stated in part: “You have worked with energy and dedication to provide solutions to the many problems that government alone cannot fix. With your active involvement, you have brought hope and help to countless people in need. ... Your work is going a long way toward healing and renewing your community, inspiring all who seek to improve our world.”

Some of these projects have become models of community betterment. When the Church undertook a project in conjunction with the Los Angeles Public Works Commission to make L. Ron Hubbard Way – the location of several churches of Scientology – one of the most beautiful streets in the city, Scientologists, local neighbors and city employees worked together to accomplish that goal. The spirit of volunteerism which permeated the effort, and the results obtained, were such that the project was fully documented by city officials to serve as a model for others.

Even more important than accolades is the recognition that members of a community can work together toward a common goal of benefit to all. And if such spirit can be ignited in one part of the world, the results can be repeated in many others.
